 Benefits of Hypnosis:

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Research findings showed a marked reductions in post traumatic stress disorder symptoms for clients, who received combined use of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and hypnosis, as compared to clients who received supportive counseling (Bryant, Moulds, Guthrie, & Nixon, 2005).

Pain management using hypnosis as a complementary intervention has alleviated much psycho-social distress with cancer patients especially with the adult population.  Studies have also shown positive results, including ‘statistically significant reductions in pain and anxiety/distress’ (Richardson, J. Smith, G. McCall, & K. Pilkington, Journal of Pain Symptom Manage, 2006 Jan Vol. 31(1), pg: 70-84). Another study shows that hypnosis as a method ‘to manage anxiety and pain associated with colonoscopy, reduces the need for sedation, and may have other benefits such as reduced vasovagal events and recovery time’ (International Journal of Clinical & Experimental Hypnosis, 2006 Oct Vol 54(4) pg:416-31).

Sexual abuse issues where hypnosis has been an integral part of a brief, but intensive, in-patient treatment program of traumatic events of many sorts resulting in familiar symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Hypnosis has been helpful ‘in symptom amelioration when the symptom onset is immediate, or even delayed, following the trauma’ (International Journal of Clinical & Experimental Hypnosis, 2004 July Vol. 52(3) pg:203-17).

Headaches & Migraines (non-organic) where hypnosis interventions have shown to be effective, and that ‘it meets the clinical psychology research criteria for being a well-established and efficacious treatment and is virtually free of the side effects, risks of adverse reactions, and ongoing expense associated with medication treatments’ (International Journal of Clinical & Experimental Hypnosis, 2007 April, Vol. 55(2) pg:207-19). ‘Training in self-hypnosis is associated with significant improvement of chronic recurrent headaches in children and adolescents’ (Journal of Pediatrics, 2007 June, Vol. 150(6) pg: 635-9)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits in the absence of any organic cause.  Although there are many ways to treat IBS, hypnosis has been found to be effective and without side effects.  The published evidence suggests that hypnotherapy is effective in the management of IBS (Journal of Alternative & Complementary Medicine, 2006 Jul-Aug, Vol. 12(6) pg:517-27).
